The Road

In order to get there, you will need to go with the ferry or take a ride with a bus or with your car. Also remember that the archipelago is quite large and it takes about five hours to go from one end to the other. This is why you should ensure that you prepare for the trip properly.


Don’t forget that the majority of the hotels offer three meals but no snacks. Also you should remember that there aren’t too many supermarkets around and if you do find one, they only carry Indonesian snacks and none of the snacks that your children are used to. This is why you might want to stock up.

The Boat

When traveling by boat you shouldn’t expect too much comfort. Sometimes the staff illegally vacates the cabins and makes some extra cash by giving them to tourists. Although the cabins are quite small, there is air conditioning and they are relatively comfortable.

Although you might be done with the long journey, you might need to travel by smaller cargo boats to reach your destination. Choose the boat wisely unless you want to spend hours on a boat with nasty fumes. Since you will spend quite some time in the sun, make sure that you have sunscreen at all times.


You can expect to find traditional dishes, mainly made of fish. Sometimes the larger resorts serve average and unimaginative food, while the smaller resorts surprise the guests will local specialties. Nonetheless you should prepare the children that there won’t be too many options to choose from.

Data and Phone Signal

If you spend a lot of time on the phone you should know that it is almost impossible to find phone signal and since there isn’t always electricity, you can be sure that you won’t spend too much time in front of the screens. It is best to take some torches and spare batteries. These will come in handy especially during the night trips to the toilet.

Although it is an exotic destination, you should consider taking your family there only if your kids are keen on connecting with nature.
