The wonderful Chinese city of Sanya lies in the southernmost section of Hainan Province, which means it comes with a tropical monsoon climate. It’s about 740 square miles in size and features approximately 130 miles of spectacular coastline which is home to numerous harbors. Because of its location, Sanya is known as an important trading destination and is often referred to as the South Gate of China.
But while it’s an essential Chinese commercial city, it’s also a popular spot with visitors due to the beauty it offers. You’ll find the city is surrounded by mountains and the sea and is a favorite vacation area with many people especially since the weather is agreeable all year round. There’s no doubt that the excellent beaches and deep blue water are two of Sanya’s biggest attractions and you’ll find a beautiful tropical, oceanic landscape here.

Some of the most popular seaside areas include Dadonghai, Asian Dragon Bay, and Sanya Bay. These are areas where many visitors come just to relax and breathe in the fresh oceanside beach air. If you’re a water sports enthusiast, you’ll love Wuzhizhou Island and if you can’t get enough of authentic Chinese food then Sanya and the surrounding region is definitely for you.
The local fresh seafood is superb and juicy tropical fruits can be found throughout the year. You’ll even be able to taste the seafood as soon as it reaches the land at some of the city’s roadside booths. The shopping is also top class and there are numerous options when it comes to accommodations, which are available in all price ranges.
In some ways, Sanya can be thought of as the Chinese version of Hawaii. Some of the most popular sites to visit while here include Tianya Haijiao, Wuzhizhou Island, Nanshan Temple, and Asian Dragon Bay. A trip to Tianya Haijiao, which means edge of the sky and rim of the sea, is a must. It’s located about 15 miles from the city center and offers some of the most heavenly scenery you’ll see. The site is home to three huge rocks that are the background for thousands of photographs each year.
Another beautiful area and one of the many bays is Asian Dragon Bay, also known as Yalong Wan. This bay, along with Sanya Bay and Dadonghai, are the top holiday resorts in the city and they’re all quite unique. They also each represent a different person. For instance, Asian Bay represents a virgin while Dadonghai represents an elegant woman and Sanya Bay represents a fisherman’s daughter.
Another popular destination is Wuzhizhou Island, which lies in Haitang Bay just north of the city. This is another gorgeous tourist site where people love to spend their days relaxing and exploring. If you head about 25 miles outside of Sanya, you’ll some to the Nanshan Temple which is located in the Nanshan Culture Zone.
Nanshan Temple is regarded as Hainan Province’s most famous Buddhist temple. It looks toward the South Sea while it sits in the shadows of the nearby mountains. You can reach the temple directly from Sanya by bus. Other fantastic locations that should be seen if you have the time include Luhuitou Park, and Monkey Island, which is a tropical nature area for macaques. There’s also a sandy beach and many other scenic spots at Monkey Island
Sanya’s a lovely location for those who’d like to explore a different side of China. Everything about the beautiful city and surrounding area is first class.
