6 Foods to Enjoy in Burma

The majority of cultures have a kind of food that is specific for them, but in the case of Burma this may be difficult to determine, since the people living in the country have different ethnic origins. Here many people have Indian food for breakfast, Burmese food for lunch and Chinese for dinner.

1. Mohinga

This might be called the traditional dish of Burma. You can find it in any teashop, restaurant or street stall. In the majority of the cases, people have it for breakfast. Although there is no general recipe for it, it is made of rice noodles and fish paste. Usually onions, garlic
and lemongrass are also added. Optionally it could also have fried gourd, banana tree stems, fish cake and chickpeas.

2. Salads

The most well known kind of salad in the country and the second signature dish of it is the salad called laphetthoke. The base of the salad consists of green tea leaves with added oil, salt, garlic and chili. Usually it is consumed with peanuts, beans, sesame seeds, garlic or dried shrimp. You should know that the recipe varies from one place to the other, so most probably you won’t find two salads that taste the same.

3. Kyay Oh

This is a new kind of food that you can find in restaurants, but you won’t find it home cooked. It has become very popular among the young people and it is said that it originated from China. The recipe is relatively simple; it is made of vermicelli noodles with pork bits, soup and greens. If you order food of this kind, the waiter will most probably ask you whether you would like the broth on the side or on the noodles.

4. Shan Kao Swe

The name means Shan Noodles, and just as the name suggests, the base of the dish consists of rice noodles that is mixed with pork or chicken, onions, tomatoes, garlic, peanuts and chilies. It may remind you of spaghetti. In the majority of the cases the tourists think of it as a safe choice because it isn’t spicy and it is widely available.

5. Egg curry

Although the Burmese curry isn’t as spicy and hot as the other kinds, you shouldn’t miss your chance to try it. In many places meat is expensive, and so egg curry might be a better choice to try the Burmese cuisine. Usually the dish is prepared using chicken eggs, but it could also be made of duck eggs. Since there is a lot of oil used, the dish has a filling and rich taste. The meal is served in a small dish, and you should have some plain rice with it.

6. Pepyokenanbya

This dish has been inspired by the Indian cuisine and you can find it in every teashop. It is a popular and inexpensive food served for breakfast. People receive a chunk of naan bread with some beans having the consistency of chickpea, topped with different spices or onions.
